✅ What helps with acidosis?
The goal is to stabilize the internal environment and eliminate excess acids from the body :
1. Optimize feeding
- more structured roughage (hay, hay pellets)
- If necessary, buffering agents such as flaxseed, healing clay, alkaline mash
2. Support acid-base regulation
👉 with AnoKath® Liquid :
- regulates the pH value in the cell environment
- promotes detoxification and cellular respiration
- Supports liver, kidneys & immune system
Dosage:
▶️ 20 ml per 100 kg horse weight daily mixed into feed as a 3-month course
❗ What is acidosis?
Acidosis means that the acid-base balance in the horse's body is out of balance – resulting in an over-acidification of the tissue and cell environment .
This impairs many important bodily functions:
- metabolism
- Muscle & nerve function
- immune system
- Performance & Regeneration
🔍 Causes of acidosis in horses
Acidosis is often not the disease itself , but a consequence of internal stresses , e.g.:
-
Feeding errors : too much concentrated feed, grain, silage
-
Stress : Transport, tournaments, stable changes
- Overtraining or lack of exercise
-
Medications : e.g., painkillers, antibiotics, dewormers
-
Metabolic disorders : EMS, Cushing's disease, liver problems
🧠 Typical signs of latent acidosis
- Muscle tension, back sensitivity
- Diarrhea, poor appetite
- Decline in performance, fatigue
- Coat problems, skin irritations
- Hoof sensitivity, tendency towards laminitis
- Nervousness, restlessness
Acidosis often goes unrecognized because the symptoms are nonspecific – often “behavior” or “feeding” is suspected.

You will receive a 3-month supply of AnoKath Liquid – tailored to your horse's weight. The recommended daily dose is 20 ml per 100 kg of body weight .
Acidosis in horses: Recognizing signs and triggers
Typical signs of acidosis – an over-acidification of the horse's body – include rapid , deep breathing, general weakness, fatigue, loss of appetite, diarrhea, and poor coordination. Many affected horses appear lethargic and have difficulty moving. In particularly severe cases, it can even lead to a coma or death.
The most common causes of acidosis in horses are metabolic disorders, infections, and kidney diseases. These, in turn, can be caused by feeding errors, overexertion, or lack of exercise. Infections such as pneumonia or colitis also put a strain on the body and can trigger acidosis. In cases of kidney problems, the body is often no longer able to excrete excess acids. Some horses also suffer from congenital metabolic defects that can contribute to chronic acidosis.
